A dead Puffer Fish, washed up on the beach at the bufadora. These literally litter the beach on the south end of the bay, where they are blown by the wind and wash ashore. I have often seen as many as 1 per square yard, for miles of beach. They are a result of shrimp fishing off the coast. They get caught in the huge shrimp nets that are dragged behind the shrimp boats, and die (along with many other species of sea life). While the other sea creatures that die in the nets sink to the bottom and remain invisible, Puffer Fish float, and are subsequently blown to shore. So the dead Puffer Fish on the shore are like the proverbial "tip of the iceberg", with other sea life being the bulk of the iceberg. Because of this carnage, there has been an informal boycott of eating shrimp in the area, until shrimp can be harvested without doing so much damage to the other inhabitants of the sea. It might be paying off - I saw much, much fewer dead Puffer Fish this year than in previous years. |
