My windsurfing friends had been telling me for years about a small town in Baja, Mexico, called La Ventana, and how great it was for windsurfing from late fall through early spring. I finally got my chance to go see for myself in December of 2001, after getting laid off from my dot com startup job two months earlier.
It turns out that my friends were right - La Ventana is a first class spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. The wind is strong, predictable, and consistent (relatively speaking). The air and water temperature are typically a very comfortable mid-70's that time of year, very similar to what I'm used to at my normal summer riding spot of Sherman Island. The substantial chop and swell make for interesting rides. And launching and landing conditions are usually very manageable. To top it off, the place is beautiful (as I hope you'll agree after viewing the images here) and quite affordable. This past winter marked my fourth year in a row of spending the holiday season ripping it up on the Bahia de la Ventana. With any luck, there will be many more to come.
I took many, many pictures this year. I've broken them up and assigned them to the sections below, though many of them could have been classified in more than one section. If you've never been to La Ventana, I suspect you'll soon understand why I return there each year. If you're already a La Ventana veteran, then hopefully these images will tide you over until next season.
