It was my first time ever at Folsom Lake, and it turned out to be a great day. This is definitely on my list from now on for those autumn days when the wind blows out of the north and makes kiting anywhere in the Bay Area most unpleasant. The next day, John and I decided to head to Lake Tahoe for some snow kiting. The same north winds were predicted, and we thought that that might be good conditions for snow kiting in Tahoe. We were wrong. We arrived at frozen and snow-covered Grass Lake, just outside of Lake Tahoe, at about 10:30am. The wind was blowing, but it seemed a bit gusty. We decided to try to get John launched with a 6 meter kite. At first, there wasn't enough wind to get the kite to fly. Then a gust came through, and up the kite went. A few seconds later, and a huge gust (30mph or more) came through, picking John up off the ground. I ran over to him to anchor him down, and we watched the kite bobbing around up in the sky like it was a hyperactive kid. After a half minute or so, the wind all but died, and the kite fell out of the sky. Seconds later, another huge 30mph gust blew through, and we decided, very wisely, to pack it up. What to do now? Well, we headed back down to Folsom Lake, and joined up with Bret again for another great session on the water. No pictures from that session -- I was having too much fun on the water. |
