Mammoth Creek Canyon
Day 4, mile 35
Elevation: 10,700 feet

We're on our way back to civilization, though it isn't readily apparent here. This photo is taken just below Duck Pass on the Barney Lake side, which is the largest body of water visible. The rounded gray peak at center left is the popular ski destination of Mammoth Mountain.

A little furhter down the trail from where this photo was taken we run into a grandfather and his grandson. They are hiking up the swichbacks to Duck Lake to do some fishing. As we approach, the boy sits down to rest his weary legs. This is essentially the same spot where we first encountered Sergeant Carter and Gomer two days earlier. I half expect the man to start barking "Get up and start moving!", but this guy is more enlightened and instead also stops and sits down until the boy is ready to continue. I'll bet this boy turns out to be a much better man than Gomer does.
